Establish a classroom atmosphere that celebrates the sharing of learning. Have opportunity for students to practice new learnings. Make student learning available to the larger community, i.e. books students write are shared with other classes, students report in school paper, student work is displayed at school, etc.

Children illustrate and publish big book, and perform a commercial to advertise big book.

Objective: To illustrate and publish the big book. To create a commercial to persuade others to read the book.

Activity: Children decide on page breaks, then illustrate each page, front and back covers. Volunteers compose and perform commercial. Teacher scripts. Children read completed book to parents, others in school.

Assessment: Each child contributes as illustrator, reader, or actor.
