Provide a metaview, lifting students into a wider view of the concept. Use another medium (not reading or writing) to connect students' personal knowing to the concept (i.e. visual arts, music, movement, metaphor, etc.) Involve learners in reflective production that blends the emotional and the cognitive.
Video tapes and magazine ads
Objective: Students will become more aware of how television commercials, ads, etc. have subtly or not so subtly influenced their choices on what they wear.
Activity: 1) Teacher will prepare a videotape before class of commercials (jeans, perfume, etc.). MTV clips, sports hero clips, movie clips, etc. and collect influential magazine ads for display. 2) Students will view videotape and ads then discuss the similarities between commercials, ads, etc. and their small group findings.
