Use another medium (not reading or writing) to connect students' personal knowing to the concept (i.e. visual arts, music, movement, metaphor, etc.) Involve learners in reflective production that blends the emotional and the cognitive.

Activity: Have the students draw what courage looks like. What color(s) show courage? What color is perseverance? Can these colors be mixed together? Ask the students to try doing an image of courage and perseverance together.
