Creating a Mental Picture

Provide a metaview, lifting students into a wider view of the concept. Use another medium (not reading or writing) to connect students' personal knowing to the concept (i.e. visual arts, music, movement, metaphor, etc.) Involve learners in reflective production that blends the emotional and the cognitive.

Partners represent a common interest using paper plate art. 2 objects are made by each pair.

Objective: To find a common interest shared with a classmate. Each pair will use paper plate art to make 2 items representing the common interest shared.

Activity: Children work in pairs to think of an activity both enjoy. As they talk, they are to think of a single object that best represents the activity (for example, soccer/soccer ball). Each child uses art scraps to depict the object on a paper plate background.

Assessment: Each pair makes 2 objects, one on each paper plate. Post decorated paper plates on classroom bulletin board after discussion of how artwork is similar among different pairs of children.
