Creating a Mental Picture

Provide a metaview, lifting students into a wider view of the concept. Use another medium (not reading or writing) to connect students' personal knowing to the concept (i.e. visual arts, music, movement, metaphor, etc.) Involve learners in reflective production that blends the emotional and the cognitive.


Switch to sticks and rubber bands.

Objective: To switch the concept to practice in another medium.

Activity: Give the children sticks and rubber bands. Let them manipulate the sticks in various combination of tens and ones. i.e. numbers apply to anything, people, toothpicks, apples etc. Teacher gives problems, 22, 17, 31 etc.

Assessment: Do the children understand? Teacher can assist those who need more help.
