Use another medium (not reading or writing) to connect students' personal knowing to the concept (i.e. visual arts, music, movement, metaphor, etc.) Involve learners in reflective production that blends the emotional and the cognitive.

Activity: Divide students into teams. Provide each team with a polaroid or zap shot camera. Direct team to take a picture which will convey a message or emotion. Pair each team with another team and let them share photo images. Have student choose a photo they reacted to strongly. Have the student write a paragraph describing the message or feeling they received from the photo.
