Provide a metaview, lifting students into a wider view of the concept. Use another medium (not reading or writing) to connect students' personal knowing to the concept (i.e. visual arts, music, movement, metaphor, etc.) Involve learners in reflective production that blends the emotional and the cognitive.
Measure objects by creating own units of measure.
Objective: To develop the understanding that objects can be measured with different units.
Activity: Give students object to measure by creating their own units of measure (cannot use inches, feet, centimeters, etc.). This activity leads into why we need conversions or transformation of measurements and why we use standard units of measure.
