Connecting to the Concept Experientially

Connect students directly to the concept in a personal way. Capture students' attention by initiating a group problem-solving activity before delivery of instruction. Begin with a situation that is familiar to students and builds on what they already know. Construct a learning experience that allows diverse and personal student responses. Facilitate the work of cooperative teams of students.


Live cocoons. Guided imagery on life cycle of a caterpillar.

Objective: To create an experience enabling children to imagine the life of a caterpillar.

Activity: At the beginning of this unit, bring in cocoons to hatch for students' observation. (Hatching time is about 3 weeks.) Have the children close their eyes and imagine they are a caterpillar. Conduct a guided imagery that leads them through its life cycle.

Assessment: Enjoyment and engagement of students
