1. Connect: Connecting to the Concept Experientially

Objective: Students will begin thinking about what they wear and why.

Activity: 1) Students will break down into small groups of three or four. 2) Groups will brainstorm ideas for the following questions: 'Why are you wearing what you are wearing?' 'What does our outfit communicate about you?'

Assessment: Group leader charts answers of all student ideas from their group

2. Attend: Attending to the Connection

Objective: Students will become aware that what they wear makes a statement about who they are.

Activity: The teacher and groups will discuss some of their reasons for selecting outfits and particular articles of clothing. The teacher should try to draw out how certain clothes are statements about the individual.

Assessment: Student participation in the discussion will be used for evaluation.

Assessment, Phase One, Level of Engagement, Fascination:

3. Image: Creating a Mental Picture

Objective: Students will become more aware of how television commercials, ads, etc. have subtly or not so subtly influenced their choices on what they wear.

Activity: 1) Teacher will prepare a videotape before class of commercials (jeans, perfume, etc.). MTV clips, sports hero clips, movie clips, etc. and collect influential magazine ads for display. 2) Students will view videotape and ads then discuss the similarities between commercials, ads, etc. and their small group findings.

Assessment: Student participation in discussion

Assessment, Phase Two, Seeing the Big Picture:

4. Inform: Receiving Facts & Knowledge

Objective: Students will be exposed to several paintings by Jacque Louis David and learn how the artist attempted to build images and influence societies' attitudes.

Activity: 1) Teacher will show three slides of Jacque Louis David's paintings. 2) The teacher will call on students to answer questions about the painting that deal with description, analysis, interpretation and judgment. Special emphasis will be made to bring out how David influenced society and in effect was a 'propaganda' artist for Napoleon and the French Revolution.

Assessment: Students will be called on throughout the class to answer questions or offer opinions.

Assessment, Phase Three, Success with Acquiring Knowledge:

5. Practice: Developing Skills

Objective: Students will learn how to describe, analyze, interpret and judge a painting.

Activity: 1) Teacher will prepare a worksheet for students that will help them describe, analyze, interpret and judge works of art. 2) Class will break up into three groups and each group will be assigned one of David's paintings used in lecture for the worksheet.

Assessment: Each group will complete a worksheet and submit it for evaluation.

Assessment, Phase Four, Success with Acquiring Skills:

6. Extend: Extending Learning to the Outside World

Objective: Students will select another painting and use the acquired skills to evaluate its influence on society.

Activity: 1) Teacher will have other selected works of art with historical information prepared for class. These paintings will span a larger period and may include works by Valezquez, Goya, Picasso, etc. 2) Students will work in groups of three or four and use the same worksheet from 3L to describe, analyze, interpret, judge and determine influence on society.

Assessment: Each group will complete a worksheet and submit it for evaluation.

7. Refine: Refining the Extension

Objective: Students will evaluate other 'arts' from using acquired skills and knowledge to determine influence on society.

Activity: The same student groups from 3R will select another representative art work in a different media such as film, TV, music, etc. Students will use the worksheet to describe, analyze, interpret, judge and determine if it influenced or was influenced by society.

Assessment: Each group will complete a worksheet/essay and submit it for evaluation.

8. Perform: Creative Manifestation of Material Learned
