I. Curricular Framework
Concept:
Rules
Essential Question:
What is the usefulness of functions in math?
Bridge:
Input and Output
Content:
Outcomes:
II. Standards Aligned
III. Instruction and Assessment
1. Connect: Connecting to the Concept Experientially
Students write an essay on how rules affect their lives.
2. Attend: Attending to the Connection
Students try to guess the rule used to develop the list of words.
Show one row at a time. Give students time to think.
Football, Skateboard, Ladybug, Chalkboard, Truckload (compound words)
Tree, Grass, Blue, Chalk, Truck (one syllable words)
Fork, Spoon, Titanic, Lead (things that sink)
Cork, Bobber, Oil, Rubber Duckie (things that float)
Assessment: Have students create one on their own. Share a few with the class.
Assessment, Phase One, Level of Engagement, Fascination:
3. Image: Creating a Mental Picture
Suppose we have a special box with a rule. (Have students guess.)
Alien -> A
Jaws -> J
What rule are we using?
(Spit the first letter of the movie out.)
What if we tried…
2001 -> ?
Error: Rule is first letter, 2 is not a letter. this is a metaphor for domain and range.
Alien, E.T., Jaws = Domain
A, E, J = Range
How about the rule…+1
Input 3, Output 4
Input ?, Output ?+1
How about the rule…square root of x
Input 9, Output 3
Input 16, Output 4
Starting to bridge into lecture.
Assessment, Phase Two, Seeing the Big Picture:
4. Inform: Receiving Facts & Knowledge
This octant is reserved to teach any objectives related to functions that you need to “uncover”.
Function lecture: define function, input, output, domain, range
function: a rule that establishes a relationship between two quantities, called the input and the output. For each input there is exactly one output.
Assessment: Making tables, using formulas and functions, rewriting equations in function form
Assessment, Phase Three, Success with Acquiring Knowledge:
5. Practice: Developing Skills
Students complete textbook problems and worksheets.
Assessment: Check for mastery of concepts
Assessment, Phase Four, Success with Acquiring Skills:
6. Extend: Extending Learning to the Outside World
Have students create a presentation on functions. Students to work together to create a rubric for the presentations.
If students have a unique idea they may use it with teacher approval, or choose from the options below:
skit, imovie, research paper, slideshow, cartoon, website, poem, poster, song, rap
Assessment: All projects should demonstrate knowledge of terminology and concepts covered in 2L
7. Refine: Refining the Extension
Have students partner with someone and score each other’s projects based on the predetermined rubric.
8. Perform: Creative Manifestation of Material Learned
Students will present their projects to the class and answer the Essential Question: What is the usefulness of functions in math?
Assessment: Quality of presentations
Assessment, Phase Five,Performance, Creative Use of Material Learned:
