1. Connect: Connecting to the Concept Experientially
Objective: To have children recall a time when they were treated very hospitably.
Activity: Have the children tell of a time when they were really welcomed somewhere.
Assessment: The honesty and details of the stories and impact on listeners.
2. Attend: Attending to the Connection
Objective: To have the children examine the characteristics of hospitality.
Activity: Have the children generate a list of what all the stories had in common.
Assessment: The richness of the list.

3. Image: Creating a Mental Picture
Objective: To explain the idea of reciprocity and to have the children relie an instance of reciprocity in their lives.
Activity: Teach the word “reciprocity” (to give in return). Next have the children create a two-fold visual of themselves doing something hospitable for someone else and then a picture of them receiving the same. Ask the children to be sure they depict true stories.
Assessment: The meaning of the picture and their understanding of the concept.

Objective: To elicit from the children the pertinent details of the story.
Activity: Have the children list the seven things the family did to extend hospitality to their relatives. Then have them list seven things the relatives did for the family.

6. Extend: Extending Learning to the Outside World
Objective: To create and experience a hospitality event of their own.
Activity: Have the children plan and carry out a hospitality event for one or two persons. Have the plan include food, talk, playing a game that their guest(s) like and have music if possible. Have them write or draw a brief explanation of what happened.
Assessment: Completion of the event and the quality of the explanation, details, feeling, tone.
7. Refine: Refining the Extension
Objective: To have the children reflect on the relationship of kindness and hospitality.
Activity: Have the children write a reflection on: hospitality is kindness made visible. Have them include in their reflection three things they could do to be hospitable.
Assessment: The understanding of the concept and their listing of the actions they will take to be hospitable
8. Perform: Creative Manifestation of Material Learned
Objective: To have the children put their learning to practical use..
Activity: Have the children create hospitality “rules” for their classroom or their homes and post them.
Assessment: Quality of the rules, do they encompass hospitality best practices?
