1. Connect: Connecting to the Concept Experientially

Objective: To create an experience for the class which shows that photos and maps are images of the real thing.

Activity: Hang photos of students in the class as well as local landmarks, map of Paterson, posters and magazines in classroom. Have some of the real objects available for the children to touch and see. Let them discuss what they are noticing.

Assessment: Verbalizing thoughts, involvement.

2. Attend: Attending to the Connection

Objective: To examine what they noticed in Q1R to themselves.

Activity: Make a comparison chart of images vs. real. Brainstorm feeling words, words that describe, importance of images (group work).

Assessment: Participation in group activity. Cooperation with group.

3. Image: Creating a Mental Picture

Objective: To connect what they have been observing to using maps in their own lives.

Activity: Play hide and seek with some object (candy, pencil, etc.) having to be found by the class. They have to follow directions heard on a cassette you will make in advance set to music.

Assessment: Enthusiasm, participation, problem solving ability, listening skills.

Objective: To reinforce what has been taught.

Activity:
1. Make a map of your desk in relation to the rest of the class.
2. Either dictate or have directions on a chart for each child to follow.

Assessment: Ability to draw map. Ability to get to the destination by following directions.

6. Extend: Extending Learning to the Outside World

Objective: To give the class different options to express themselves and what they know.

Activity:
1. Map the 1st and 2nd floors of our school for use in firedrill floor plans.
2. Plan "find the food" directions for our Q4 celebration.
3. Make the decorations with direction words.
4. Draw map of their homes (front of paper = outside, back = inside).

Assessment: Good involvement by each student, working well together in group, information required for project is accurate.

7. Refine: Refining the Extension

Objective: To refine their projects so that they are ready to be shared.

Activity: Teacher moves around the room to each group to assist and keep them on task. Children coach each other and complete the projects.

Assessment: Good coaching skills. Editing is visible.

8. Perform: Creative Manifestation of Material Learned

Objective: To practice and share what they have learned.

Activity: Have a map party. Hang decorations. Play "find the food" so they can eat. Post the floor plan maps around the school and explain to each class.

Assessment: Enjoyment, able to explain to other classes how a floor plan is used, ability to follow directions and find food.
