Objective: To create an experience using action verbs.
Activity: Children participate in square dancing activity.
Assessment: Involvement, participation, and enjoyment of students.

Objective: To analyze the calls used in the dancing.
Activity: Students form cooperative learning groups formed from their dancing square. Each square is given a poster board and markers for listing the call words which directed the action. The teacher creates a master list from contributions of each group of squares.
Assessment: Teacher evaluation of student discussion and participation.

Objective: To see the wider application of the action words already used.
Activity: Two groups of squares form two teams. Each team will participate in charades using the action words from the class list.

Objective: To introduce the word “verb” and to expand student understanding of verbs as action words.
Activity: Teacher provides instruction connecting action words and verbs. Student read text and teacher shows teaching filmstrip. Using overhead projector and a list of words which are action verbs and nouns, teacher checks for understanding, using “thumbs up, thumbs down” for student internalization of concept.

Activity: Students use practice worksheets accompanying text.

Activity: Students select their own example of an action verb. They draw a picture illustrating their verb. On a separate piece of paper, they write a sentence using their verb.

Objective: To evaluate and share student drawings.
Activity: In cooperative learning groups, students share their drawing without showing their sentences. They guess each other's action verbs correctly, and evaluate each other's sentences.
Assessment: Student contribution to the group, and student sensitivity to the work of others.

Objective: To take delight in using action verbs.
Activity: Children participate in aerobics exercise demonstrating as many as possible of the action verbs used by them throughout the unit.
