Objective: Students will identify and discuss the impact of visual images.

Activity: Have students bring photos of an earlier event in their life. Share the photo and tell about the event in small groups. Have students discuss another event not associated with the photo. Reflect on the differences in conversation and discuss.

Assessment: Determined by individual participation and group participation.

Objective: To compare and contrast the impact of a visual of an experience.

Activity:Have students discuss another event not associated with a photo. Reflect on the differences in conversation and discuss.

3. Image: Creating a Mental Picture

"Picture" the concept of visual communication.Objective: The student will illustrate the concept of visual communication through photography.

Activity: Divide students into teams. Provide each team with a polaroid or zap shot camera. Direct team to take a picture which will convey a message or emotion. Pair each team with another team and let them share photo images. Have student choose a photo they reacted to strongly. Have the student write a paragraph describing the message or feeling they received from the photo.

Assessment: Participation and writing assignment.

Objective: Presentation of the concepts of visual communication

Activity: Students are shown many forms of visual communication and compile a chart of each form and its characteristics

Assessment: Group understanding and accuracy and depth of understanding displayed by charts

5. Practice: Developing Skills

Objective: The student will experiment and practice various techniques of drawing to convey emotions.

Activity: Guide students through the use of gesture and contour techniques. Have students practice. Demonstrate various mediums, i.e., compressed charcoal, vine charcoal, ebony pencil, pen and ink, brush and ink, ink and wash, etc. Have students experiment with expressing emotion: call out emotions and allowing them to respond visually. Give each student a subject matter/object to illustrate three times. Each illustration should convey a different emotion.

Assessment: Critique.

6. Extend: Extending Learning to the Outside World

Objective: The student will extend the concept of visual communication to a project of their own choice.

Activity: Have the student brainstorm about topics they would like to make a social comment about. Then have them illustrate their feeling toward the subject. The illustration should reflect clearly the artist's view of the subject.

Assessment: Teacher and peer critique.

7. Refine: Refining the Extension

Objective: The student will critique their own work pointing out the strengths and weaknesses.

Activity: The student writes a critique of their own work. The student then presents the piece to class for a group critique. Focus on what topic is illustrated, does the image match topic, emotion involved, does the medium and technique used match the emotion or message, etc.

Assessment: Student participation and formal critique.

8. Perform: Creative Manifestation of Material Learned

Objective: Students will display completed project along with a personal concept paper.

Activity: Visual is to be in presentation form to be displayed as part of the Visual Communication Exhibit. Students will also submit a personal concept paper detailing the objective and project process.

Assessment: Completeness of project and depth of understanding the visual communication concept.
