I. Curricular Framework

Concept:

Patterns-wheel 4 of 7

Essential Question:

How has the study of patterns in your world led directly to the study of patterns in math?

Bridge:

Around and Cover

Content:

Study of Area and Perimeter

Outcomes:

II. Standards Aligned

III. Instruction and Assessment

1. Connect: Connecting to the Concept Experientially

Objective: To create an awareness between the meaning of "around" (perimeter) and "cover" (area).

Activity: In groups, students will act out the meaning of the words "around" and "cover." Allow students time to plan and practice before they perform for the class.

Assessment: Participation and group work.

2. Attend: Attending to the Connection

Objective: To analyze the meanings of "around" and "cover."

Activity: Discuss the differences in the two words. Why and how do they differ? Why did your group choose to enact the concept in that manner?

Assessment: Participation in discussion.

Assessment, Phase One, Level of Engagement, Fascination:

3. Image: Creating a Mental Picture

Objective: To create an awareness that an equal distance around does not necessarily result in the same amount to cover.

Activity: Give each group a given length of string with which they are to create a shape that will hold the largest number of beans possible. Give each group beans with which to cover their shape. Is there a pattern in the results as far as the type of shape and the number of beans?

Assessment: Involvement in activity, group work.

Assessment, Phase Two, Seeing the Big Picture:

4. Inform: Receiving Facts & Knowledge

Objective: To present instruction on finding area and perimeter and on the patterns in the relationship between the two as dimensions change.

Activity: Instructional activities on: 1) Finding perimeter and area of a plane figure involving circle,
2) Find the area and perimeter of parallelograms, triangles, trapezoids and irregular figures.

Assessment: Class participation, notetaking.

Assessment, Phase Three, Success with Acquiring Knowledge:

5. Practice: Developing Skills

Objective: To provide the learner with practice in finding area and perimeter.

Activity: Guided practice, textbook exercises, worksheets, and quizzes.

Assessment: Quizzes and tests.

Assessment, Phase Four, Success with Acquiring Skills:

6. Extend: Extending Learning to the Outside World

Activity: Go to patterns wheel 7

7. Refine: Refining the Extension

Activity: Go to patterns wheel 7

8. Perform: Creative Manifestation of Material Learned
