Objective: To creat an experience to connect learners with safety issues.

Activity: Learners list experiences of near misses and share with group OR Learners undertake virtual risk taking exercise eg. Land mine walk across room.

Assessment: Involvement of learners in the experience.

2. Attend: Attending to the Connection

Objective: To analyze the previous experience.

Activity: Group discussion of experiences using structured questions. Facilitator leads discussion to identify issues in relation to safe and unsafe practices which arose as a result of previous activity.

Assessment: Quality of learner contributions.

3. Image: Creating a Mental Picture

Objective: To clarify & deepen the meaning of safety and its personal consequences.

Activity: Learners can choose one of the following:
- create a metaphor for safety
- create a picture of what safety means to them
-create a collage of what safety means to them
Learners discuss in small groups and devise one sentence/motto/saying to encapsulate all images.

Assessment: Learners involvement in activity.

Activity: Facilitate informal lecture on:

5. Practice: Developing Skills

Objective: To enable learners to apply knowledge and practice skills as outlined in lecture.

Activity:
Learners:
-answer a quiz on legislative/policies/procedures
-watch a video relating to hazards and discuss specific questions related to the video.
-practice lifting and transferring techniques.
-practice hand waching and complete a matched words quiz on infection control.
-complete a stress self evaluation then put together an individual stress management plan.

Assessment: Participation in all activities.

Assessment, Phase Four, Success with Acquiring Skills:

6. Extend: Extending Learning to the Outside World

Objective: To apply the principles and elements of workplace safety.

Activity: Complete one of the following:
Learners in the workplace can complete an occupational health and safety report on your workplace as outlines in element 5 ORG4.
or
Using a case study scenario, learners answer a set of specific questions related to element 5 ORG.

Assessment: Successful completion of case study, analysis or workplace report.

7. Refine: Refining the Extension

Objective: To refine the learners understanding of their role in occupational health and safety in the workplace.

Activity: In small groups each learner gives an overview of their assignment. Wtihin the small group learners discuss and list how many different ways they can contribute to making the workplace safer.

Assessment: Participation of individuals in the activity.

8. Perform: Creative Manifestation of Material Learned

Objective: To share what has been learned.

Activity: In small groups make a “Work Safe” advertisement suitable for display within the workplace, to be shared with the larger group.
